Ela Vermette-Furst is a Michif (Red River Métis) social-ecological systems researcher and enrolled member of the Manitoba Métis Federation interested in co-producing knowledge with Indigenous communities on pathways toward food sovereignty. Ela's research background began in her second year of her undergraduate degree when she joined ResNet. Since then, she has collaborated on numerous research projects exploring relationships between nature and marginalized communities using ecosystem accounting, ecological resilience science, “two-eyed seeing” approaches and decolonial methodologies. She completed her B.A. (Hons.) in environment at McGill University in 2024. Her honours thesis is in partnership with Heiltsuk, Haida and Nuu-chah-nulth Nations and explores leadership perspectives on what food sovereignty looks like in the face of sea otter recovery, climate change and other social-ecological regime shifts affecting their coastal food system.
