Billie is an Adjunct Faculty of Graduate Studies, School of Resources and Environment at Dalhousie. He is a geographer addressing human-environment relationships focused on land dynamics from ancient societies to current sustainability problems. Those themes involve vulnerable and resilient landscapes and design of land systems on environmental services with fieldwork in Central America-Mexico, Eastern Africa, Southern Asia, and the Southwestern U.S.A. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), American Academy of Arts and Sciences (USA), and Associate Editor of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He spend part of every year in Halifax with his Canadian spouse.
