Git Kinjuaas is a Hereditary Chief of the village of Cumshewa of the St’awaa XaaydaGaay and serves at the Hereditary Chiefs Table for the Haida Nation. His father, Niis Wes, taught him about the ocean and the place we occupy. Git Kinjuaas continues to be a harvester of our foods and medicines from the ocean and land. He has been an artist for most of his life, carving monumental poles down to small articles of jewelry in mediums ranging from gold to mastodon tusk. The subjects he portrays in his art reflect the ancestors, the Supernatural beings, that came out of the ocean. Git Kinjuaas has hosted two potlatches, one to honour his late uncle and the other to legalize his inheritance of the position he was born into. |
