Jane Mariotti
MSc. Candidate | University of Guelph | Landscape 4
Jane is an ecologist with a passion for community-centered research and land-based food systems. Her previous work centered around Manoomin (wild rice) as a culturally important foodplant within Treaty #3 territory in northern Ontario. Jane's senior undergraduate thesis explored the recovery trajectory of boreal mosses under the interactive disturbances of permafrost thaw and wildfire. As a member of Landscape 4, Jane hopes to collaborate with communities to support local food sovereignty efforts under a rapidly changing climate.
Jane will be working to further our knowledge surrounding the food growing capacity of northern soils, with the goal of supporting resilient and adaptive northern food systems. Specifically, her research will provide NWT stakeholders with information on local-scale soil fertility, landscape-level predictors of soil fertility, and nutrient-loss potential over a growing season. Her research will address the effect of wildfire on soil fertility, food-growing capacity, and nutrient loss potential. |
