Kyra Rolfe
Masters Student | Simon Fraser University | Landscape 5
Kyra Rolfe is currently a master’s candidate working under the supervision of Dr. Wendy Palen in the Earth to Oceans (E2O) research group at Simon Fraser University (SFU), where she is delving into the intricate web of cumulative effects in BC. She completed a Bachelor of Science at Queen’s University in 2021, majoring in Biology with a focus on ecology. In the final year of her undergraduate degree, Kyra completed an honours thesis providing evidence of a mediatory effect of interference competition on hummingbird responses to climate change. With a keen interest in the intersection of environmental conservation and sustainable energy development, Kyra’s MSc research is focused on understanding the cumulative ecological impacts of future energy developments in the Peace River region of northeastern BC. Specifically, her master’s thesis examines the complex relationship between wind energy expansion, caribou conservation, and upholding Indigenous rights. Combining spatial conservation planning, data analysis, and ecological modelling, Kyra aims to uncover insights crucial for effective environmental management and policymaking. Her work underscores the importance of balancing the imperative for renewable energy with the conservation of vulnerable species. Through her research, Kyra aspires to contribute to a more harmonious coexistence between human activities and the natural world.
