Lara is a biologist interested in social-ecological dynamics through the study of ecosystem services provision and trade-offs between agricultural landscapes and spatially restricted and threatened natural habitats. Her most recent research was based on mixed methods for the assessment of reasons of change in the use of traditional agricultural practices, and the effect of these on habitat quality and carbon storage. Currently she is working towards the understanding of adaptation to climate change through coastal management and restoration and the implications of these strategies on ecosystem services such as pollination. On the conservation part, Lara leads a project of ex-situ conservation of threatened plant species in Mexico, participates in several environmental justice projects, and is part of an international initiative that highlights the work of women in conservation in Latin America through workshops, talks, science communication and networking (https://www.mujeresyconservacion.org/home).
