Monique Poulin is a full professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at Laval University, since 2003. Her research aims at understanding patterns of species diversity in natural and disturbed landscapes and mechanism driving plant community structure. A large part of her research focusses on wetlands and riparian habitats. She uses both experimental and observational approaches, involving multivariate statistical analyses. She works to develop restoration techniques for different types of ecosystems, including the management of riparian strip in agricultural landscapes and the use of ecological engineering for river bank stabilization. How urbanization impact natural ecosystems is also part of her work. An important aspect of her research concerns question on how to manage landscapes to ensure the sustainability of ecosystem services provided by natural ecosystems. More specifically, she uses tools from systematic conservation planning to build conservation network that optimize costs and the supply of ecosystem services (ES). The demand for these ES is also considered. Lately, she started to adapt these tools to plan restoration at the watershed scale, to overcome the actual paradigm for which restoration sites are selected on a case-by-case basis. Her work has been influential lately for provincial regulations on wetlands. She is a member of Quebec Center for Biodiversity Science (QCBS), of Institut en Environnement, Développement et Société (Institut EDS) and member of CentrEau (Université Laval) and GRIL.
