Hup-in-Yook Tom Happynook is the Head Hereditary Whaling Chief of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations and served as the chairman of the Nuu-chah-nulth Council of Ha’wiih (Hereditary Chiefs). Raised in Bamfield, British Columbia, Hup-in-Yook has always been deeply involved in all aspects of social, cultural, spiritual, and economic recovery of the Huu-ay-aht. Hup-in-Yook served as the Huu ay aht First Nations’ Chief Treaty Negotiator during the Maa nulth Final Agreement negotiations. He was then asked to sit as a commissioner with the BC Treaty Commission by the BC Cabinet. Hup-in-Yook has lectured at Universities around the world bringing to the forefront Huu-ay-aht / Nuu-chah-nulth culture and traditional knowledge that has been passed down through his family. |
